Golden Strata, Chamberlain Gorge

Chamberlain Gorge, El Questro, late in the afternoon — the sandstone wall holding the heat of the day.

The cliff face fills the frame in ribbed bands of ochre, terracotta and charcoal grey, each layer a record of slow geological time. Late sun lights the ledges from one side, deepening the shadow lines between strata; small pockets of green cling to the rock where they can. Below, the water settles flat and dark, doubling the wall back on itself.

What the photograph holds is the patience of stone. A surface that has been weathering for far longer than memory, lit for one warm hour at the end of a Kimberley day before the gorge falls back into shadow.
