Golden Hour on the Water: A Sunset Cruise through Chamberlain Gorge

An Evening Journey Through the Colours and Creatures of Chamberlain Gorge

Tucked within the wild heart of El Questro, Chamberlain Gorge offers a kind of magic that only reveals itself in the glow of the late afternoon. On our recent visit to Western Australia, we had the chance to experience this firsthand with a relaxed sunset cruise—a journey where time slowed, colours deepened, and nature put on a quiet, spectacular show.

Setting Out into the Gorge

Our group climbed aboard a small boat at the edge of the gorge, greeted by our cheerful guide and the stillness that had descended with the afternoon. As we pushed gently away from the bank, the ancient walls of Chamberlain Gorge rose on either side, streaked with ochres, reds, and purples, their reflections undulating on the water’s glassy surface.

Wildlife Encounters

Though we didn’t travel a great distance, the short cruise was packed with life. Rock wallabies appeared briefly along the cliffs, impossibly nimble as they hopped across narrow ledges. Pairs of rock pigeons, camouflaged in soft grey and brown, watched us from above. In the water, a couple of languid freshwater crocodiles basked in the sun, barely acknowledging our passage.

The waters were rich with catfish and archer fish. It didn't take a long before they all making their presence felt for some food. Joining the fishy mayhem that followed were a couple of large barramundi, who did not want to miss out.

According to our guide, the archer fish have long since learned to recognise a ranger’s uniform, eagerly spitting arcs of water in hopes of a treat. True to form, several came to the surface, targeting the guide’s face with impressive aim, much to everyone’s delight.

Natural Wonders in Every Glance

But the delights of Chamberlain Gorge go well beyond wildlife. As the sun lowered, the entire landscape was set ablaze with light. We were in for a special treat as our guide pointed out specimens of the iconic Kimberley Rose—a vivid pink bloom found only in this incredible region. Their delicate petals contrasted the rugged rock, and, for a moment, everything stood still in the late-day heat.

The Perfect Sunset

Drifting quietly, we watched the sun set the cliffs alight before finally dipping behind the escarpments. The air grew softer, the colours even more luminous, and it was easy to feel dwarfed by the scale—and age—of the land around us.

Guided by Experts

Our guide brought the place to life with stories and a deep knowledge of local flora and fauna, sharing experiences that can only come from years on the water. It was clear that Chamberlain Gorge is not just a destination, but a living tapestry that changes with every hour, every season, every visitor.

Lasting Impressions

As we returned to the landing, dusk approaching, I knew this sunset cruise would be one of the enduring memories of our Kimberley adventure. For anyone visiting El Questro, a boat trip through Chamberlain Gorge isn’t just an option—it’s an essential immersion in the quiet grandeur of the Australian wilderness.
