El Questro: Sunset Magic at Buddy’s Lookout

El Questro: Sunset Magic at Buddy’s Lookout

Where Legendary Stories Meet Spectacular Skies in the Heart of the Kimberley

As the sun began its slow descent over the rugged landscape of Western Australia, our group set out from the El Questro Homestead, ready for an evening that promised both natural beauty and a touch of local legend. Our destination: Buddy’s Lookout—one of the region’s most revered vantage points.

An Evening to Remember

The journey up to the lookout was an adventure in itself, winding through red dirt tracks flanked by ancient boab trees and striking escarpments that glowed in the late afternoon light. The dust that was stirred up by the ‘safari’ style jeep on the climb masked the truly stunning vista that awaited us.

Overlooking Buddy's Lookout

As we reached Buddy’s Lookout, the landscape opened up before us—sweeping views over the Chamberlain River, sprawling grasslands, and dramatic rocky outcrops. The sun hung low, casting amber and amethyst hues across the Kimberley sky. With a cool drink in hand and a delicious cheese platter within touching distance, we settled in to watch the landscape transform, the ever-changing light illuminating the wild terrain below.

Buddy's Lookout

The Story of Buddy

But Buddy’s Lookout is more than just a beautiful spot—it’s a place rich in local history. Named after “Buddy Tyson,” a legendary El Questro stockman who played a pivotal role in shaping the property’s early days, the lookout pays tribute to his love for the land and deep ties to the Kimberley. Buddy was renowned for his knowledge of the station, his unyielding work ethic, and his warm hospitality to guests and staff alike.

It is said that Buddy himself often ended his days at this very vantage point, taking a moment to watch the sun set over the place he called home. Today, a visit to Buddy’s Lookout is as much about soaking in the scenery as it is about pausing to reflect—on the land, its stories, and the people who shaped its history.

A Final Golden Glow

As the sun set above the ranges our group lingered a little longer, savouring the stillness and the sense of connection—both to the land and to those who came before us. A sunset at Buddy’s Lookout isn’t just a view; it’s a moment of Kimberley magic, capturing the spirit of El Questro in every shifting shadow and glowing ember on the horizon.
