Sunrise over Bass Strait, Flinders — the sky doing most of the work.

From the shore at Flinders the horizon opens onto the Strait, and the early sky is doing what it sometimes does here: amber and crimson swirling against the cooler blue still hanging on overhead. The sun is up enough to warm the horizon line; the water below carries the same colours back in softer form. The frame is mostly sky — a wide canvas of moving colour over still water.

What the photograph holds is the colour of a morning that hasn't yet flattened into day. A short window when the palette is its own event, and the rest of the coast simply receives the light.

The palette is warm and soft — amber, crimson, dove-grey, the cool blue of a sky still letting go of night. Sympathetic to limewash plaster, oak, raw linen, ceramic, brass; settles well into coastal, contemporary or country-modern rooms.
