The Japanese garden at Nijo Castle, Kyoto — pine, stone, and a still pond doing the work of a room.

The composition is built from the garden's own elements: lush pine trees, meticulously placed stones, a reflective pond carrying the trees down again into the water. Nothing in the frame is accidental — every stone has a position, every pine has a shape that sits with the others. The image reads as composed before we arrived to photograph it.

What the photograph holds is the design vocabulary of a Japanese garden — controlled, balanced, not asking to be admired. A scene that has been arranged for so long it now feels found. Stillness held in stone and water.

The palette is green and grey — pine green, weathered stone, the deep mirror of the pond. Sympathetic to raw oak, limewash plaster, linen, ceramic, woven straw. Settles well into rooms that lean Japandi, contemplative or restrained-modern: a living room, a study, an entryway, a calm bedroom — anywhere the eye can rest on green for a while.
