The Chū-Kondō stands head-on in radiant morning sun, the vermilion columns deep and saturated, the brilliant blue sky open above. Where the morning light catches the roof, the distinctive golden ornaments gleam — small bright punctuations along the line of the eaves. The architectural detail comes forward in the early sun: the joinery, the bracketing, the long horizontal of the tiled roof.

What the photograph holds is a building meeting its day. UNESCO World Heritage, the original hall founded twelve centuries ago and rebuilt with care; in this frame the hall is simply being looked at well, in the kind of light that flatters old timber and old gold.
