The Chū-Kondō stands square in crisp sunlight, its vermilion pillars and tiered eaves drawn out against the deep blue. The vantage is from the side rather than the front: the long line of the roof carries the eye, the symmetry of column-and-bracket repeats down the length of the hall, and the sky above is unbroken. A view that lets the architecture speak — line, proportion, colour, rhythm.
